Our outreach exhibition of work by Dementia Artist Philip Watmough will be opened by
DJ Spoony on Saturday 19. August around 10:30. DJ Spoony is well know for his charity work, receiving the British Empire Medal this year for his services to charities through music during covid. The Eagle Gallery is committed to promoting and supporting development of the local community, especially disadvantaged groups, as part of our Community Outreach programme. Therefore, we are delighted to be exhibiting work by Philip Watmough, who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Dementia in 2009 aged 57.
Philip is supported by the Tibbs Dementia Foundation, a registered charity in Bedford which was founded 10 years ago and provides a wide range of activities for people in all stages of Dementia, diagnosed or not, and those who support them. Their focus is on what people can still do and how Tibbs can help them use their skills and experience together. Philip did not have an artistic background but joined a series of art classes run by Tibbs at The Higgins Museum and Gallery here in Bedford. Though Philip’s great ambitions of creating 3D castles and buildings didn’t work out he found his niche creating abstract pictures with oil pastels. Over time these have evolved from circles and lines to more in depth compositions of massed colour. Philip gets a sense of purpose and achievement while doing his art, a unique way of expressing himself as finding the right words becomes more difficult. The proceeds from all of Philip’s work sold at this special exhibition at The Eagle Gallery will be donated to Tibbs as thanks for all the support he has received and for the charity to continue to help others. Please join us for the open day on Saturday 19th August. We will also have work from all gallery members on show during the exhibition. |
