Sue’s work is inspired by her love of nature, the magic of myths, dreams and symbols and Britain’s megalithic past.
Living on the ancient Icknield Way beneath Galley Hill in Bedfordshire, Sue finds the Chiltern landscape and its wildlife a constant source of inspiration. Combined with a lifelong interest in Britain’s mythic past and the power of symbols to intrigue and enlighten, Sue’s paintings are layered with different levels of meaning for the viewer to discover. Sue believes passionately that it takes two to create a painting - the artist who offers it and the response of each individual person who looks at it.
All her work reflects a love of the intricacies of Celtic design, the jewelled quality of Indian and Persian miniatures, and harmonious shapes and patterns. Using a combination of watercolour and gouache she creates glowing paintings, framed by a border of words which add another layer of meaning. These are often fragments of poems written by the artist, and inspired by the painting.
Sue’s love of photography - especially black and white - has come from a long career within the management side of the image media industry. After looking at thousands of photographs she really knows what she likes and concentrates on those unexpected moments, quirky and interesting juxtapositions, and sudden insights or shifts of the light where the ordinary suddenly looks quite extraordinary. They are presented as windows onto moments that are nearly lost.
After a long career in the management side of the image media industry, Sue finally decided making her own pictures was (and always had been) much more fun than managing other people’s, and she decided to change direction and work full time as an artist and photographer. She set up Galley Hill Art and now produces her own limited edition giclée prints and cards of all her work.
