An extensive experience of global travel provides the basis for Patricia’s art work. A camera and sketch book are the medium through which immediate impressions are captured and brought back to the studio. From the broad sweep of landscape to intimate details of a rockface, a drawing or photograph can mark the start of an artistic process or equally become the final output.
In the studio, she translates experiences of the external world into printwork such as monoprints or collagraphs or paintings using watercolour or pastel. These techniques demand a simplification of the complexities of what is seen into line, pattern and/or colour whilst conveying the essence of the subject. More than one medium might be combined such as drawing and photography or pastel and ink. The output is often a play with ideas but always with the emphasis on producing an aesthetically pleasing outcome and one that represents her relationship to her environment.
Photography is an important part of Patricia’s work and she has won prizes twice at the Luton Art Show. However it is not about keeping a record of travels but rather of reactions to the environment which might be the colours, the textures, shapes or patterns and their interaction. Some photographs do not focus on the object itself but rather on an indicator of its presence such as shadows or reflections which distort the original but beguile the eye with mystery and questions. Ideas and impressions become more important than the factual content. It is this difference in approach to taking photographs which moves the end product into the ambit of fine art photography and away from the documentary.
Patricia had a career as an academic social scientist which included research in South Asia and with ethnic minorities in the UK. These experiences have helped inform her transition into becoming an artist. After undertaking art education as a mature student, Patricia joined the Eagle Gallery in 2009. As well as participating in group shows she has had a solo exhibition here in 2010 and a joint one in 2012. Recent external exhibitions include Carnival Fantasia, a group show at the Carnival Arts Centre in Luton as part of the Cultural Olympiad with one of her photographs used for the front cover of the programme. In October 2012 she participated in a group show in St Martin’s in the Field in Trafalgar Square with photographs and prints.
