I was brought up in Bridgend, South Wales where the wide variety of landscapes proved to be an influence in my early work.
I gained entry to the foundation course at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham in 1965. I remained at BAA for my Diploma in Art and Design, specialising in painting and sculpture. My subsidiary subject was printmaking and I was introduced to screen printing by Steven Russ. I was a studio assistant to Robyn Denny during my final term.
My Art Teaching Diploma and Certificate of Education was at the City of Leicester Polytechnic where I studied ceramics and printmaking.
My first year of teaching was in a Secondary Modern school in South Wales and from there I became Head of Department in a new purpose built open plan department, at Sir John Lawes School Harpenden. Here I taught painting, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, theatrical design, puppetry and printmaking to ‘A' level.
After thirty years I became a part time teacher and also worked as an 'A' level Art Examiner for the OCR board and then as a examiner and team leader for Cambridge International Examinations. (Somebody had to do in country marking for Kenya, Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand).
During this period I bought a printing press and started to specialise in Lino printing with the occasional sculpture.
My interests which inform my printmaking are Gothic Architecture, landscapes and the Neo Romantic Movement.
Contemporary printmakers who inspire me are… Julia Manning, Laura Boswell and the Pine Feroda group..
I mainly concentrate on the reduction method of Lino printing, which can involve up to twelve overlays of colour. I do not always work from a completed design - which allows forms, colours, subject matter , and layering to evolve over time.
