Isla’s inspiration comes mainly from the natural world, shapes and textures found on the land. Abstract colours are often intensified to express feelings and excitement of a place and time.
The paintings are mainly on canvas or paper using acrylic, watercolour and sometimes mixed materials to create texture.
Some canvases are started directly outside and finished off in the studio while others are started as small watercolour sketches then used to create a larger painting in the studio. She works in a spontaneous and intuitive way her starting point always coming from landscape.
Isla is particularly inspired at the moment by Barbara Rae and Gillian Ayers.
Isla studied Graphic Design and Illustration for 4 years, then worked for a leading wildlife organization on their publicity material, now she concentrates full time on her painting.
