Being creative is my passion whether I am working with clay, painting a picture, baking a cake or knitting socks. I will work with most media but recently I have become more involved with acrylic and watercolour. I draw my inspiration from the countryside where I live and places that I visit. I am most interested in the linear shapes in nature and the patterns and shapes they make on the page.
I spent some of my childhood in South Africa which I feel accounts for my love of vibrant colours. Here I encountered wild life in abundance: monkeys playing in the schools, snakes in the undergrowth, vegetation everywhere. The steamy heat of the day contrasted with the sudden blackness of the night. A great profusion of shapes ,sounds and emotions.
Near Birmingham I trained to be an Art and Craft teacher. The 3 years here introduced me to many activities and experiences I may never otherwise have had. The Art department was inspirational and here my work flourished . This was where I became interested in ceramics and taught blind children to work with clay. I think I learnt more than they did! I still keep my drawing up to scratch by taking part in a life class inspired by my life at college.
After a few years teaching I married a farmer and I helped develop a thriving chicken and sheep farm. I love all animals and need to express my love for them on canvas. I looked after 2000 free range chickens so I feel I have a good knowledge of their structure and habits. March was lambing time when life became very hectic and I have a lot of sheep works of art in the pipeline. Though my work is very varied and can range through a wide variety of subjects from classical Greece to modern music.
I belong to the Artists Network and take part in the Open Studios. I have exhibited locally and have been fortunate enough to sell paintings and take commissions from these events. I have a studio in Bedfordshire which you would be very welcome to visit, but please ring for an appointment.
