Les Miller

Les studied Fine Art at Edinburgh from 1964 to 1969 and taught Art until 2006. Although he painted sporadically throughout his teaching career it is only recently that he has been able to become fully absorbed once again in drawing and painting.
His subject matter is quite varied and has touched on politics and the human condition but much of his recent painting has been engaged with problems arising from the contradictions of depth or form on the flat picture plane. Les has a broad knowledge of art and enjoys making deliberate references and exploiting influences. He enjoys working in a fairly wide range of 2-dimensional media and still values the importance of drawing. His work moves between abstraction and figuration, exploring ambiguities of space and discrepancies of suggestion; it involves ongoing processes and is concerned with maintaining the integrity of the medium whilst tackling the underlying problems of expression, picture-making and aesthetics.
