I grew up in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, and now live in Heath and Reach where I have a studio.
I have a BA Honours Degree in Fine Art from Loughborough and a post-graduate Art Teacher’s Certificate from Goldsmiths. During the last 20 years I have exhibited in and around Bedfordshire, at Bromham Mill, AIM Gallery CMK, Woburn Abbey, and Moat Farm Gallery amongst others, and I also belong to the Artists’ Network Bedfordshire. With over 30 years’ varied teaching experience in schools, colleges and adult education, I currently run independent classes and workshops locally alongside my Art practise.
As a figurative Artist, drawing from observation is fundamental to my practise, allowing me to create my own visual language using objects as symbols. Life Drawing, in particular, is a discipline that continually challenges and feeds naturally into my portrait work.
I am inspired by stories from history, fairy tales and folklore. I like to interpret meanings that are relevant to issues I feel strongly about as portraits, landscapes and still life. I’m influenced by a long tradition of artists: from Van Eyck, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Holbein, to Magritte and the Surrealists to name but a few.
When working on a portrait for commission I will include symbolic items such as jewellery or significant objects that are meaningful to the sitter, so that a narrative is established giving vital clues to this person’s life and who they are.
If you are interested in commissioning a portrait, please see my contact details below.
