Jan was born in Luton and studied English at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. She taught English in Bedford until 2006 when she re-entered education as a student to study Fine Art. After taking the Foundation course at Bedford College she has completed a Fine Art degree at Loughborough University School of Art and Design and is now embarking on a PhD.
She mainly works in two areas: the social/political and the aesthetic. In both she focuses on the manipulation of found objects and traditionally ‘unaesthetic’ materials such as steel, wood, paper, slate and lead which she distresses to foreground the natural processes of ageing, decay and instability. She uses archetypal methods of collecting, stacking, sequencing and layering to produce reliefs, 3D pieces and assemblages in which the inherent energy of the materials is transferred to the observer. Her recent work has been increasingly conceptual, aimed at raising the spectator’s awareness of the integrity of the printed book and its changing status in an increasingly digitalised world.
